FAITH AND VALUES IN THE TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED WORLD (1)
INTRODUCTION
Once upon a time people used to go to library before collecting material on subjects of their interest but in a technologically advanced world like ours, browsing through internet and other technological gadgets makes it easier. Information today is not hard to get. There is no doubt tha the digital world has influenced a great part of the life of the twenty first century man positively and negatively. EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON CHRISTIAN FAITH AND VALUES There are both positive and negative effects of technology on the christian faith and values but it appears that technology has more subtle negative effect on the Christian Faith and Values.
Rather than suspecting technology and technological objects, some Christian parents welcome it with open arms believing that its effect is more positive and negative. Today many children, teens, and tweens frequently use cell phones, desktops, laptops, ipads, iphone, video games and television. They also use social media like face book, twitter, you tube, forsquare, tumbir, pinterest, yelp and many other social platforms to maintain friendship, post information and discuss all sorts of subjects of their interest. The reliance of children on technologies results to some funny behaviours and habits. This creates conflicts between children and their parents.
All elements of technology and social communication are first of all God;s creation and not men. The whole creation of God is good but man must do what is right to realize the good. We are stewards of God's creation, therefore, we mut judge technology and technological objects see its instrumental value in helping us to realizing the good and fulfilling our moral obligations. No doubt, technology can help children to know god as well as leading them away from God. Some of the dangers that technologies pose to Christian Faith and Values include but not limited to: - Danger of pornography - Danger of false teachings - Danger of leading children away from God - Danger of making children too busy thus not having time for God and His Kingdom - Danger of decline in church attendance CONCLUSION In the words of David Kinnaman, "Technology is as old as craftsman's tools. But today digital and emerging technologies are in a different class than hundreds of other hobbies or interest because they have come to significantly define the use of time, the development of talent, and the allocation of money". He also observes that - Christians seem to lack strategic commitment to the stewardship of technology - Christian community needs a better, more holistic understanding of how to manage existing and coming technological advances. - Christian parents, teens and tweens needs more coaching an input in order to face the countless choices they make regarding how technology affects their attention, interest, talents and resources. Therefore, parents, teens and tweens should note the following: - Admit that technology is both good and bad. - Seek to know the good as well as the bad effects of a technology and technological objects before embracing them. - Carefully examine any technology and technological object before embracing it. - Be suspicious of every technology and technological object. - Be media literate and utilize the good potentials of technology responsibly. - Do not be a digital technology addict. - Always use technology and technological objects responsibly.
